GEITA – The National Conservation and Environmental Management Council (NEMC) has urged government and private institutions to ensure they conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) before beginning any investment project.
NEMC’s Director of Environmental and Community Impact Assessment Ms. Lilian Lukambuzi told reporters in Geita while handing over an assessment certificate to the coordinator of the Small Gold Miners Mercury Control Project. The project is funded by the World Bank.
Ms. Lukambuzi said that conducting an Environmental Impact Assessment is the only basis that will give you the opportunity to identify the environmental impacts in the area in question and give you the opportunity to develop any project while considering environmental control.
“We, as NEMC, are the coordinators in controlling the use of mercury chemicals according to the Environmental Law of 2004 and its Regulations,” she said.
