DAR ES SALAAM: THE National Sports Council (NSC) has reaffirmed its commitment to preserving and promoting traditional sports, with a particular emphasis on the cherished board game, Bao, as Tanzania marks its 63rd anniversary of independence.
The game, a cultural staple in Tanzania, holds deep historical significance, with roots intertwined with the nation’s heritage and the values instilled by the Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere.
In a statement made by the NSC Executive Secretary, Neema Msitha, the Ministry’s efforts to keep traditional sports alive are gaining momentum.
Msitha highlighted the successful registration of these games within official systems, ensuring their continued relevance in modern society.
Bao, a popular board game that has been cherished for generations, has found a renewed place in the national spotlight, thanks to the council’s ongoing efforts.
“The National Sports Council has successfully recruited leaders for the Bao game, recognising its cultural significance,” Msitha explained.
“Despite the rise of new federations and the many international festivals that take place, Bao remains an important part of our cultural fabric.
“The father of the nation, Mwalimu Nyerere, was a strong proponent of this game, promoting it both within the country and on the global stage. His passion for Bao has contributed significantly to its resurgence and we are continuing that legacy today.”

Msitha underscored the council’s efforts to re-engage leaders who had once stepped away from Bao, saying: “We have made significant efforts to bring these leaders back into the fold. Our aim is not only to promote the game but also to create lasting connections within the community, providing the necessary resources to sustain Bao for future generations.”
The celebration of Tanzania’s 63rd anniversary is not only a moment to reflect on the progress made but also a call to honour and sustain the cultural heritage that defines the nation.
The government’s active involvement in revitalising traditional sports, especially Bao, is a meaningful gesture to keep the nation’s spirit alive.
These efforts, aimed at reawakening a deep appreciation for Tanzanian culture, will ensure that the traditions cherished by ancestors continue to thrive.
