Nation bids farewell to fallen Judge Werema

DAR ES SALAAM: PRIME Minister Kassim Majaliwa, on Thursday led mourners to pay last respect to the departed former Attorney General, Judge Fredrick Werema, describing him as a man of principles and professionalism.
The fallen Judge Werema served as Tanzania’s Attorney General between 2009 and 2014, during Dr Jakaya Kikwete’s presidency.
He passed away at the age of 69 while undergoing treatment at the Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) in Dar es Salaam on Monday, December 30, 2024.
The Premier, who represented President Samia Suluhu Hassan at the funeral ceremony which was held at Karimjee Grounds in Dar es Salaam, said Judge Werema was an outstanding leader who upheld professionalism and followed principles throughout his tenure.
“The Head of State, Dr Samia, understands that the deceased during his lifetime served in various positions in the government and possessed a vast experience in serving the public” Mr Majaliwa said.
“The President urges all of us to be tolerant in this difficult time, continue praying for the departed and embrace his legacy,” he added, asking lawyers in the country to emulate Mr Werema’s hardworking spirit.
On his part, former President, Dr Jakaya Kikwete eulogised Mr Werema as a competent lawyer and true patriot whose advice always carefully prioritised the national interests.
“He was competent and deeply committed to justice. He has done a lot for the country. He has indeed left an indelible mark,” Mr Kikwete said.
Dr Kikwete said in 2009, he appointed Judge Werema as the AG due to his outstanding qualifications, competency and hardworking record.

The current AG, Mr Hamza Johari eulogised a visionary leader and expert of laws, Judge Werema, who upheld justice as the foundation for national development.
“Judge Werema made significant reforms in the entire legal and justice system in the country by strengthening rule of laws, uplifting junior lawyers through training.
Also, he demonstrated his unique leadership during hard times,” Mr Johari said. Moreover, former Prime Minister, Judge (rtd) Joseph Warioba said Mr Werema was an honest leader who leveraged his potential for the country’s development.
Solicitor General, Dr Ally Posi said Judge Werema was key player in the country’s legal industry who remained to be an active influential figure in the field. The fallen Judge Werema will be laid to rest in Kongoto village, Butiama District in Mara Region.
