ZANZIBAR: As the nation celebrates 60 years of the Union, President Hussein Mwinyi is expected to grace the Union forum organized by Zanzibar’s Institute of Public Administration (IPA) and Dr Salim Ahmed Salim Centre for Foreign Relations (SAS-CFR) to discuss various issues related to the Union.

Dr Jacob Nduye of SAS-CFR told journalists yesterday that organizing the forum jointly reflects our agreement to strengthen collaboration in various areas, including research and education development.

He mentioned that the objective of the forum is to examine the development of foreign relations in the past 60 years of the Union, how it has benefited the people on both sides of the Union, and its impact on a sustainable blue economy.

Dr Nduye said that the forum starting today, will be held at the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA), and is expected to attract participants from private and public institutions, students, NGOs, and other stakeholders from both Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania.

“We particularly invite young people to follow the debate so that they can learn about their country and foreign relations and be in a position to safeguard the Union,” he noted.

Speaking on the importance of the Union, Dr Hamad Khamis Said from IPA said that it is crucial to educate young people about the history of the Union so they can pass on the knowledge to future generations.

“Since we are academic institutions, apart from these conferences, we engage in research and writing. Let’s use our expertise to impart knowledge about the history of the Union and its significance,” said Dr Said.

He also mentioned that the two institutions will organize a Union essay writing competition for Tanzanian students from both primary and secondary schools.
