Mwinyi swears-in new Minister for Labour

ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR President Dr Hussein Mwinyi swore in the newly appointed Minister of State in the President’s Office for Labour, Economy, and Investments, Mr Sharif Ali Sharif in the Isles yesterday.
Mr Sharif took over the position following a recent mini-reshuffle that resulted in the exclusion of two Ministers: Mr Jamal Kassim Ali (State House) and Suleiman Makame (Blue Economy and Fisheries), and the resignation of Mr Simai Mohamed Said, who was the Minister for Tourism and Heritage.
After being sworn in, Mr Sharif pledged to meet the expectations of the Zanzibaris and the President, stating: “I will do my best to serve the people and ensure all my duties are carried out effectively.”
During the swearing-in ceremony for some ministers and their deputies two weeks ago, Dr Mwinyi reminded all serving leaders that their primary responsibility is to serve the citizens and the country.
Meanwhile, Dr Mwinyi met and held talks with Canada’s High Commissioner to Tanzania, Zambia, Seychelles, and Comoros, Kyle Nunas, along with a delegation from the Canadian and African Parliaments Association led by Senator Amina Gerba at the Zanzibar State House on Thursday.
During their discussions, Dr Mwinyi encouraged investors from Canada to explore available opportunities to invest in the blue economy, highlighting tourism, fishing, shipping, ports construction and operations, oil, and gas as thriving industries.
“Tourism is a significant sector in Zanzibar, contributing about 30 per cent to the GDP. There are still more opportunities in the tourism sector,” he emphasised.
Dr Mwinyi expressed gratitude to the Government of Canada for the strong cooperation between the two countries, acknowledging their support in various areas of development, including education and health.
He also commended the Canada/African Parliaments Association for their visit to the archipelago, stating: “We have a unique union between (Mainland) Tanzania and Zanzibar, serving as a model for Africa. We welcome foreign countries and associations to share their experiences with us.”
In a separate development, Dr Mwinyi highlighted the progress made in improving media freedom and access to information in Zanzibar and (Mainland) Tanzania, emphasising the Government of National Unity (GNU) that aims to create more opportunities for women and youths in business.
