ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR President Hussein Ali Mwinyi flew to Harare, Zimbabwe, yesterday to represent President Samia Suluhu Hassan at the SADC Organ Troika Extraordinary Summit.
The high-level meeting focuses on addressing regional security, particularly in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
The summit, to be chaired by Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa, brings together leaders to assess the progress of the SADC Mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC), a peacekeeping initiative deployed nearly a year ago. The mission aims to restore stability and foster development in the conflict-affected region.
SAMIDRC was deployed by SADC on December 15, 2023, with a one-year man – date to address the security issues in the DRC, aiming to restore peace, security, and stability to support sustainable development in the region.
The Summit will be preceded by meetings of SADC Senior Officials, the Ministerial Committee of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, and the SADC Council of Ministers, to be chaired by Tanzania’s Foreign Minister and Minister of East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo.
Dr Samuel Shelukindo, Permanent Secretary in Tanzania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, is also set to attend today’s meeting of the SADC Organ Troika Committee of Permanent Secretaries from member states.
