ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR President Hussein Mwinyi has committed to sustained investment in the education sector, including the construction of new infrastructure and improvement of n teachers’ welfare.
President Mwinyi voiced his satisfaction with the impressive performance of students in the recent examinations, highlighting the achievements as crucial for the nation’s social and economic development.
His remarks came during a special luncheon at the State House on Monday, honouring Unguja’s Form IV and VI students who excelled in the 2023 and 2024 national examinations, respectively.
The president expressed pleasure at the increasing number of students scoring division one, noting that these results reflect the country’s determination to excel across various sectors.
He emphasised that improving infrastructure, hiring more teachers especially for science subjects and enhancing teachers’ compensation are top priorities for the government.

He also announced plans to increase educational loans for higher education students and encouraged them to take full advantage of these opportunities for their academic advancement.
President Mwinyi acknowledged that while educational outcomes may not be immediately visible, the progress being made, particularly in Zanzibar, is motivating the government to invest more in the sector.
He commended teachers for their pivotal role in this success.
Second Vice-President Hemed Suleiman Abdulla praised President Mwinyi for his role in the educational achievements on the islands, attributing the positive outcomes to substantial government investments in education.
Education and Vocational Training Minister Leila Mohamed Mussa credited the significant educational achievements to the implementation of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party’s manifesto, which focuses on enhancing education.
In 2023, Zanzibar had 24,420 students sitting for form four national examinations across Unguja and Pemba, with 958 students achieving division one.
This year, 3,402 students sat for the form six examinations, with 594 securing division one.
