Mwinyi calls for peace, unity

ZANZIBAR: President Husein Mwinyi has urged citizens to continue strengthening unity, peace, tranquility and commit to hardworking ahead of the 2025 General Election, wishing them a happy New Year.

Dr Mwinyi reminded all citizens in the archipelago to keep on cherishing peace and collaboration while delivering his end-of-year and New Year message on Monday night.

“As we join the world in bidding farewell to 2024 and welcoming the New Year (2025), we bear a great responsibility to thank the Al mighty God for allowing us to maintain peace, unity and na tional solidarity in our country. We need to strengthen these values,” Dr Mwinyi said.

He extended his New Year greetings to all Tanzanians, friendly nations and all development partners.

He said the upcoming 2025 General Election al lows citizens to exercise their constitutional and democratic rights of electing leaders.

He said that both the Union Government and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, through the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC), have already initiated preparations to ensure fair and lawful election process. “I take this opportu nity again, to call for lasting peace in the country before, during and after the elections,” Dr Mwinyi empha sised.

He directed political leaders, civil institutions, religious leaders and all citizens to remind one another of the importance of maintaining and safeguarding the country’s existing peace which is crucial in advancing development for the present and future generations.

Highlighting Zanzibar’s development recorded last year, he said the revolutionary government has achieved significant success in building up economy, improving infrastructure, trade and investment, social services, democracy and strengthening good governance. Furthermore, he said Zanzibar has made remark able progress in enhancing revenue collection.

“Significant achieve ments have been realised in the construction of urban and rural roads, airports, and seaports, housing development, distribution of electricity and clean water, and improvement in the education and health sec tors across the country,” he said.

Dr Mwinyi said the government has been em powering citizens economically by launching loan pro grammes with favourable terms for various groups and creating better business environments, particularly following the official opening of modern markets at Mwanakwerekwe and Jumbi.

President Mwinyi pledged that the government will accelerate the implementation of development plans, urging citizens to continue maintaining peace, unity and solidarity.

In another development, President Mwinyi commended the security organs for ensuring peace throughout the year in the isles. He called on all work ers in the private and public sectors to be committed in increasing productivity in 2025.

“Each person in his or her capacity should contrib ute to our country’s developmental efforts,” he said.

Dr Mwinyi also expressed his sincere gratitude to all citizens, government leaders, religious leaders, civil society organisations, the private sector and development partners both domestically and interna tionally for their tremendous cooperation in enabling the government to implement its development pro grammes successfully.

He also extended grati tude to President Samia Suluhu Hassan along with other leaders and officials in the Union Government for their collaboration in sup porting Zanzibar.

“Let us continue this cooperation in the coming year to further enhance economic growth, social services and the well-being of our people,” he said.

President Mwinyi also reminded citizens to con tinue with preparation for marking 61 years of Zanzi bar Revolution, which are set to be commemorated on January 12, this year.
