DODOMA: Members of the Tanganyika Law Society (TLS) have unanimously endorsed Advocate of the High Court of Tanzania, Boniface Mwabukusi, as their new president.
The counselor at law takes over from Advocate Harold Sungusia after garnering a total of 1,274 votes, equivalent to 57.4 percent of the total vote count. He will lead the TLS for the next three years.
Apart from Mwabukusi, other candidates who contested the position in the election held at the Jakaya Kikwete Convention Centre in Dodoma on Friday included Sweetbert Nkuba, Ibrahim Bendera, Paul Kaunda, Emmanuel Muga, and Revocatus Kuuli.

During the fierce campaign, Advocate Boniface Mwabukusi declared, “I am a lion leading a pride of lions, and Tanzanians will begin to see the presence of this society because TLS has a duty to the citizens, government, members, and the rule of law with the separation of powers within the state pillars.”
“I want to bring unity to the legal profession, which is currently divided. When we have a responsible TLS, it is our duty to lead Tanzanians to understand the legal truth of international contracts and policies we engage in.”
The Tanganyika Law Society (TLS) is the Bar association of Tanzania Mainland, founded in 1954 by an Act of Parliament – the Tanganyika Law Society Ordinance 1954. The Tanganyika Law Society is currently governed by the Tanganyika Law Society Act, Cap 307 R.E. 2002.
Currently, according to information available on the TLS website, the Bar has 8,514 practicing members, 1,007 non-practicing members, and 387 deceased members.
