Musoma Rural Constituency disburses 75.8m/- for laboratory construction

MARA: MUSOMA Rural Constituency, through its development fund, distributed equipment worth 75.8m/- yesterday for the finalisation of laboratory construction in all ward secondary schools.

This was revealed by the Member of Parliament Professor Sospeter Muhongo, on Tuesday.

Prof Muhongo mentioned that the equipment included 2,010 bags of cement, 311 steel sheets and 344 iron sheets allocated for constructing physics, chemistry and biology laboratories in all the schools.

Providing details on the distribution of cement bags, he mentioned that Nyasaungu Secondary School received 50 bags, Rukuba Island 205, Kigera 100, Nyanja 100, Bulinga 100, Bukwaya 150, Muhoji 50, Rusoli 100, Busambara 150, Nyambono 150, Mtiro 150, Suguti 100 and David Massambara Memorial 205.

However, he noted that iron sheets were provided to only three schools, namely Etaro Secondary School which received 120 sheets, Mabuimerafuru 105 and Mtiro 139.

He noted that due to the limited number of iron sheets, they were divided among the three aforementioned schools where the laboratories are at the roofing stage.

Nonetheless, he mentioned that each school receiving the equipment will only need to incur transportation costs from the Musoma District Council’s warehouse.

Prof Muhongo emphasised that once completed, the laboratories will serve as a foundation for rural students to excel in science subjects, especially Physics, Biology and Chemistry.

“For a long time, the absence of laboratories has hindered students’ interest in studying science subjects. I believe the presence of laboratories will motivate them to embrace science,” Prof Muhongo stated.

He added that currently, the performance of Musoma Rural secondary students in science subjects is unsatisfactory, mainly due to the lack of laboratories for practical learning. In the entire rural area, he mentioned that last year only 21 students studied Physics and 26 studied Chemistry out of 123 students who graduated from Form Four.
