Musoma residents to receive compensation for airport expansion project

MARA: AT LEAST 49 Nyasho Street residents in Musoma District will receive compensation amounting to 3.9bn/- to pave the way for an airport expansion project.
Musoma District Commissioner Juma Chikoka announced this during the launch of the compensation payment activity. He stated that residents with permanent structures have been given a 90-day notice to vacate and relocate.
“We urge everyone receiving compensation to vacate and establish new residences so that the project can proceed as scheduled,” said Mr Chikoka.
He also called on residents still involved in land disputes, particularly at the clan level, to reconcile promptly to facilitate timely compensation and project implementation.
Nyasho Ward Councillor, Mr Haji Mtete, commended the government for honouring its promise to compensate the residents, noting that development on the affected plots had been on hold since 2017. Some beneficiaries expressed their gratitude to the government, highlighting the long wait since the stop order was issued.
“It seemed like the government had forgotten about us, but justice has finally been done. We promise to vacate as soon as we are paid, likely within the first month of compensation,” said Ms Elizabeth Juliga on behalf of the residents.

The residents urged the government to ensure the project is completed within the targeted timeline, citing the airport’s importance to the region’s economic development.
For years, they said, the lack of airport services has hindered efforts to engage in key economic activities like fish exportation and agricultural trade.
“There’s great potential for exporting sardines from Lake Victoria and farm produce like avocados. The airport will help us tap into these opportunities for personal and national economic growth,” said a resident.
They also highlighted the challenges of relying on land transport to Mwanza for flight services, expressing hope that the airport will significantly improve mobility and foster regional and international interactions.
“We look forward to the project addressing this long-standing issue and bringing economic opportunities to Musoma,” added Mr Elias Nyatwali, another resident.
