Msigwa satisfied with Malya college upgrading project
MWANZA: THE Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Culture, Arts, and Sports, Gerson Msigwa has expressed satisfaction on the ongoing construction of new dormitories costing 2.56bn/- for Malya Sports Development College.
Accompanied by the Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Suleiman Serera, Msigwa embarked on a tour of Malya Sports Development College in Mwanza City to assess the progress.
The two leaders and other sports officials early this week engaged in inspection of the ongoing construction of new dormitories capable of accommodating 192 students.
Msigwa and his team also inspected a construction site of the National Sports Academy being built within the college premises at 31.5bn/-.
The academy is envisioned to be a Centre of Sporting Excellence, incorporating various sports infrastructures, including Olympic-standard swimming pools, football fields, netball courts and athletics tracks.
Speaking after the inspection, Msigwa expressed pleasure with the ongoing construction project and emphasised that Malya College is an important institution which is utilised to groom different sports talents from all over the country.
He highlighted that the college will serve as a training ground for coaches and sports instructors across the country.
“The government has chosen to invest in this college to produce high-quality sports professionals and coaches,” he said.
He further stated that the college will be utilised as a training centre for national teams in various competitions.
He also expressed the intention for the completed project to host various national and international competitions, underscoring the importance of creating opportunities for Tanzanian athletes to showcase their talents on a global platform.
However, he noted that the current number of students enrolling in the college for various sports training programmes is not satisfactory, yearning for more students to enrol to receive diverse sports education.
“We aim to develop a special programme to promote the dissemination of sports education so that Tanzanians recognise the important opportunities provided by President Samia Suluhu Hassan,” he said.
Addressing some of the students in various sports disciplines at the college, Msigwa urged them to ensure they become outstanding coaches and athletes, contributing to the development of sports in Tanzania.
“I believe you will be exceptional athletes and coaches in our communities, ensuring Tanzania progresses in various sports,” he said.
Msigwa assured that the ministry will ensure various reforms are made in the college, touching upon infrastructure and curricula improvements.
