LINDI: THE government of Liwale District in the Lindi region has praised Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) for establishing a maternity waiting home and renovating health facilities in the area.
Acting District Medical Officer Dr Khadija Saidi Kitiku noted that this support is crucial for better serving mothers and children under five.
Located at the main health centre, the maternity waiting home offers a safe space for pregnant women, especially those with high-risk pregnancies, ensuring timely medical care to prevent complications from conditions like hypertension and diabetes.
MSF has also renovated operating theatres and maternity units, improving overall maternal care quality. Additionally, the organisation has addressed sanitation issues by creating a waste management zone with an incinerator and supplies essential medicines to six local health facilities.
MSF has strengthened local healthcare by adding 64 healthcare workers, including doctors, nurses and laboratory technicians, as well as 41 community health workers.

Dr Kitiku stated, “MSF’s partnership has significantly strengthened healthcare delivery in Liwale.” Dr Jumanne Magati, the medical officer in charge, called the waiting home a “game-changer” for expectant mothers from remote areas, highlighting the importance of medical supervision before delivery.
The organisation has also tackled infrastructure challenges by drilling a borehole at Kibutuka health centre for clean water and adding two ambulances to district services. Local residents have expressed their gratitude for these improvements.
Kulwa Shija, currently at the maternity waiting home, said, “This facility has been a lifesaver.” Keja Masaga, who supported her daughter during delivery, added, “Thanks to MSF, my daughter safely gave birth to a healthy baby boy.”
Dr Kitiku also commended MSF for its effective response to last year’s measles outbreak, which included a vaccination campaign. Through its continued support, MSF has become a vital partner in enhancing healthcare for vulnerable populations in Liwale.
