Moshi set to host Memorial Rugby 10s tournament

DAR ES SALAAM: THE northern town of Moshi in Kilimanjaro region will come alive today as it hosts the much-anticipated Moshi Memorial Rugby 10s Tournament, a day-long celebration of rugby, remembrance and community.

Organised by the Tanzania Rugby Union (TRU), the tournament makes its return to Ushirika Stadium under the theme ‘Honour. Unite. Play’.

The event brings together men’s and women’s teams from across Tanzania for a full day of competitive matches, unity and purposedriven sport.

TRU General Secretary Anthony Dawa confirmed to the ‘Daily News’ that preparations are complete and all systems are gone for the event, which kicks off at 10:00 am and runs through 6:00 pm.

“The tournament serves a dual purpose,” said Dawa.

“It not only provides a platform to grow and showcase rugby in Tanzania, but also pays tribute to members of our rugby fraternity who are no longer with us.”

In a unique twist from typical rugby seven events, this tournament will feature men’s 10-a-side and women’s 7-a-side matches.

Teams from key rugby hubs, including Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Dodoma, Kilimanjaro, Tanga and the host town Moshi, are set to compete.

This year’s tournament also aligns with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, incorporating advocacy and education as part of its broader community focus.

“We see this not just as a sporting event, but as a moment to remember, reflect and unite,” added Dawa.

“It’s a celebration of life, sport and social responsibility.”

Entry to the event is free, with food and refreshments available throughout the day, according to Dawa.

Fans are encouraged to come out and enjoy a day of rugby set against the breathtaking backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro.

He said the tournament is powered by Afroil and supported by corporate sponsors, including Kago Logistics, OLEA Insurance Solutions Africa, Great Lakes Freight Ltd and BLANQ—whose support has been instrumental in making the event possible.

Dawa stressed that they are expecting a strong turnout from both local and regional fans as Moshi prepares to host what promises to be a memorable showcase of athleticism, teamwork and community spirit.
