MNH, Road2IR team for special joint pain treatment

DAR ES SALAAM: MUHIMBILI National Hospital (MNH) in collaboration with the American organisation Road to Intervention Radiology (Road2IR) are expected to conduct a special medical camp for diagnosing and treating patients suffering from severe joint and body pains through advanced radiology treatment.

Speaking to journalists on the programme, Dr Erick Mbuguje, a radiology specialist at MNH said that the camp will offer treatment for patients with various severe types of pain, categorised into two main groups back pain and pain in other body parts.

He said the first group will include patients with severe back pain not caused by cancer such as worn-out vertebrae, fractures or collapses where pain management does not involve surgery.

He said that they will also deal with pain cases with disc compression on nerve roots causing radiating leg pain that cannot be treated surgically and patients with pain from vertebral joint issues.

Patients with back pain due to cancer, which has caused vertebral fractures or nerve compression, will also receive this care because their case is different from these other pains, he said.

He said that the second group includes patients experiencing severe pain in other body parts not caused by cancer, such as in the knees, shoulders and hips where pain management does not involve surgery.

Furthermore, Dr Mbuguje said that patients with other cancer-related pains, like those from pancreatic cancer, will also benefit from this service and this programme will be led by world-renowned specialist Dr David Prologo from Emory Health Care in the United States.

Screening and treatment services will take place from 4th to 15th November, 2024 in the Radiology Department. Radiology treatment is a specialised medical field where an expert physician uses imaging technology (such as Angio-Suite, CT, X-ray, Ultrasound and others) to guide diagnosis or treatment through small incisions without surgery.
