MNH-Mloganzila to host knee, hip surgery camp

DAR ES SALAAM: MUHIMBILI National Hospital-Mloganzila has invited Tanzanians with knee and hip problems for specialised treatment from specialist doctors from India and their Tanzanian counterparts.

The hospital is looking forward to conducting a knee and hips surgery camp from September 26th to 30th this year.

Assistant Director of Surgical Services at Mloganzila hospital, Goodlove Mfuko said the patients will be examined and later undergo surgery at the health facility.

“This is the second time we host this kind of camp to address these challenges here at Muhimbili,” he noted.

According to Dr Mfuko, all preparations have been completed.

He mentioned some of experts from Yashoda hospital in India as Dr Ram Mohan Reddy. The camp has been organised in collaboration with Global Medicare.

“This specialist will collaborate with our expert doctors who are specialists in orthopaedics and accidents at Mloganzila and this will be the second time for us at Mloganzila to provide this kind of service.

During the first camp, we successfully performed hip and knee replacement surgery to 170 patients,” he said.

He added that Dr Reddy will arrive in the country along with his team of experts and participate in the exercise.

He said doctors from both Tanzania and India are expected to share experience, skills and develop networking.

“We are therefore asking people with knee and hip problems to come to Mloganzila early so that they can be examined by specialists and later a decision will be made depending on their condition,” he noted.

The Mloganzila’s orthopaedic specialist, Dr Joseph Amos, said the camp will involve surgery for all hip and knee problems.

“We are going to have a knee and hip specialist from India, he has been doing this job for the past 20 years.

He will be here to serve Tanzanians along with his colleagues,” he noted.

According to Dr Amos, the hospital has been conducting an exercise to identify people who qualify for the service and that the exercise is set to end today.

A hip joint replacement means replacing one or both sides of the hip joint with an artificial socket and a metal ball and stem.

A knee joint replacement means replacing one or both sides of the knee joint and often the underside
