Mining commission seeks to increase opportunities in mineral sector

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzania Mining Commission has embarked on a strategic drive to raise awareness about mineral opportunities, attract investment and promote value addition in the sector.

Executive Secretary Engineer Ramadhani Lwamo told the ‘Daily News’ in Dodoma that Tanzania’s mining industry holds immense potential to drive economic transformation if fully developed.

“Tanzania is richly endowed with a wide range of minerals from gold, Tanzanite and nickel to industrial minerals like limestone and gypsum. What is needed is expanded investment to tap these opportunities,” he said.

He noted that the Commission’s participation in the recently concluded Nanenane exhibitions aimed to encourage more stakeholders to invest in mining and its related industries.

“Through various platforms, including Nanenane, we are connecting with farmers, entrepreneurs and potential investors to show how they can benefit from the sector not only in mining, but also in processing, trade and the supply of goods and services to mining projects,” he explained.

The Commission, he added, has stepped up efforts to formalise artisanal and small-scale mining, improve compliance and expand access to modern mining technologies.

This, he said, is key to boosting productivity, increasing government revenue and improving safety and environmental standards.

“We are committed to ensuring that mineral resources benefit all Tanzanians,” Eng Lwamo stressed.

“Our vision is not only to increase production but also to strengthen local content so that more Tanzanians can participate in the mining value chain.”
