Mbeki visits  SA freedom fighters’ camp in Tanzania

MOROGORO: FORMER South African President Thabo Mbeki has visited the historic site of Mazimbu, located in the Morogoro region of Tanzania, as part of the Africa Day celebrations held annually on May 25.

The visit holds deep historical and symbolic significance for the African continent, highlighting Tanzania’s crucial role in the liberation struggle of South Africa against apartheid.

Mazimbu, now part of the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), once served as a residential and training center for freedom fighters of the African National Congress (ANC), led by the late Nelson Mandela. During that period, the area functioned as a refuge and strategic base for South African liberation fighters fleeing the harsh realities of apartheid.

During his visit, Mbeki toured the graves of fallen freedom fighters buried at Mazimbu, laid a wreath in their honor, and planted a memorial tree to commemorate the site’s historical importance. He also visited the SUA hospital, which at the time provided medical services to ANC members, and held discussions with the university leadership, led by former Prime Minister Joseph Warioba.

Mbeki announced that his foundation, in collaboration with the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation, plans to produce a special documentary about Mazimbu. The aim is to ensure that South Africans are more aware of this vital history and to honor the significant contribution of Tanzanians to South Africa’s liberation.

Speaking emotionally after visiting the site, Mbeki stated, “Mazimbu is our home. This is not just part of South Africa’s history it is a symbol of true African solidarity. Tanzania stood with us in our darkest days of oppression. Today we are free because you received us, educated us, and gave us refuge.”
