Mbeki honours South Africa Freedom Fighters camp

MOROGORO: THE former South African President, Thabo Mbeki, has arrived in Morogoro for a special visit to the historic site of Mazimbu, which once served as a settlement for South African freedom fighters who lived in exile during the Apartheid Regime.
Mbeki traveled to Morogoro aboard the modern Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) train, arriving at the Jakaya Kikwete SGR Station.
He was warmly received by Morogoro Regional Commissioner Adam Malima, alongside other government officials and representatives from various institutions.
This visit forms part of the 2025 Africa Day celebrations, commemorated annually on May 25.

The day marks the founding of the African Union (formerly known as the Organization of African Unity – OAU) and promotes unity, development, and a shared identity across the African continent.
Mbeki is in Tanzania at the invitation of the Thabo Mbeki Foundation, in collaboration with various Tanzanian institutions. Together, they have organized this national-level commemoration of Africa Day.
Mazimbu holds a unique place in Africa’s liberation history, and Mbeki’s visit underscores the historic ties and enduring solidarity between Tanzania and South Africa.
