Massive investments in Tanzania ports drive record cargo growth

DAR ES SALAAM: A total cargo volume of 16.5 million tonnes was handled by all ports managed by the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) between May and November this year, attributed to significant investments and improvements in port facilities.

Addressing journalists in Dar es Salaam on Thursday, Government Spokesperson Gerson Msigwa noted that this figure represents a 5.2 percent increase compared to the 15.6 million tonnes handled during the same period last year.

According to Mr. Msigwa, the number of containers handled across all ports during the period reached 621,584, marking a 3.29 percent rise compared to the 601,805 containers managed in the corresponding period last year.

“We have every reason to highlight the substantial investments made by the government through the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA),” he stated.

Focusing on the Port of Dar es Salaam, Mr. Msigwa revealed that the cargo volume handled between May and November this year was 14.4 million tonnes, reflecting a 5.6 percent increase compared to the 13.7 million tonnes recorded during the same period last year.

Regarding container cargo at the Port of Dar es Salaam, he mentioned that 598,672 containers were handled, slightly surpassing the 597,613 containers managed during the same period last year.

Additionally, transit cargo for neighboring countries handled between May and November this year totaled 6.3 million tonnes, a significant 19.3 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
