A RESIDENT of Nyamholo street, Ilemela District in Mwanza region, Dervinus Nkabatina (46) has committed suicide after killing his wife Rausa Mohamed (36).
Mwanza Regional Police Commander (RPC), Wilbroad Mutafungwa told reporters that Nkabatina killed his wife on September 28, this year and ended his own life on September 30, this year. The RPC said on the day he killed his wife, the two had engaged in a family row.
He said during the commotion, Nkabatina pushed the wife on the ground and stabbed her on the neck. “The neighbors rushed to the scene after hearing noises and found the wife profusely bleeding on the ground. The neighbors rushed her to Igoma health centre where she was pronounced dead later,” he said.
The RPC said Nkabatina escaped from home to an unknown place after committing murder. “Police were informed of the incident and we immediately launched a manhunt of the suspect,” said RPC Mutafungwa.
He added that on September 30, this year at around 1pm, the suspect went to Ndama Bar in the city and ordered a 750ml Konyagi bottle, which he took along with some pills.
The RPC said after few minutes his situation worsened, the bar attendant swiftly called the police. He said police rushed to Ndama Bar and grabbed the suspect to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
“Nkabatina had a brown envelop that contained metronidazole tablets and a piece of paper with a message,” he said. According to Mr Mtafungwa the message on the piece of paper read: “the devil is calling me, oh almighty God, I surrender my soul into your hands,” He added that the message also expressed his regret for killing his wife.
According to the RPC, the suspect also explained that he has decided to take his own life and asked to be buried in Mwanza.
“He said his body should not be transported to his home village in Karagwe, Kagera region and instead he must be buried in Mwanza City,” said the RPC.
Mr Mtafungwa urged citizens to avoid taking the law into their own hands and to seek appropriate methods for resolving their challenges.

He asked the public to consider involving religious leaders, parents, and other stakeholders who can provide counseling services to help prevent incidents of murder. The RPC asked citizens to continue reporting crimes and criminals to ensure prompt action by the police and other legal authorities.
