MWANZA: CONSTRUCTION of the 33 billion/- National Sports Centre of Excellence in Malya, Kwimba District, Mwanza Region, is progressing steadily, reaching 13 per cent completion.
The state-of-the-art facility, once completed, aims to revolutionise sports development in Tanzania. The project is being implemented in two phases by CRJE (East Africa) Limited.
CRJE (East Africa) Limited has announced that the 33 billion/- National Sports Centre of Excellence under construction in Malya, Kwimba District, Mwanza Region, is now 13 per cent complete.
The project, aimed at creating a state-of-the-art facility for athletes, is expected to boost sports development in Tanzania. In a briefing to reporters yesterday in Mwanza, the company’s Site Agent, Eng Peter Kulwa, provided details on the ongoing work, which is being executed in two phases.
Phase 1 (Lot 1) includes the construction of a new student hostel, cafeteria, classrooms and indoor sports buildings, covering a total of 6,434 square metres. The phase also involves the creation of three football pitches, a running track, two basketball courts, two volleyball courts and two tennis courts.
Lot 2 will focus on building team changing rooms, toilet blocks, and swimming changing rooms, covering an area of 3,483 square metres. Additionally, the phase includes the construction of an Olympic swimming pool and related outdoor works.
The project, which began in December 2023, is being implemented by CRJE (East Africa) after being awarded the contract by the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports. The ARU Built Environment Consulting Company Ltd is providing project consulting services.
Eng Kulwa addressed the challenges that have caused delays, noting that the original completion date for Lot 1 was set for December 2024, but payment delays from the government have pushed the timeline. The project team has now rescheduled Lot 1 completion for September 2025. Eng Kulwa emphasised the need for timely payments from the government to avoid further delays.
