Major projects worth 20bn/-launched in Moshi

KILIMANJARO: THE government has allocated over 20bn/- for the upgrading of three major roads and two storm water drainage systems in Moshi Municipality, Kilimanjaro Region.

Moshi Municipal Council (MMC) Director, Ms Mwajuma Nasombe, announced the projects during a contract signing ceremony held recently in Moshi, noting that the works are being implemented under the Tanzania Cities Transforming Infrastructure and Competitiveness (TACTIC) programme.

She said the projects will involve upgrading the 6.9-kilometre Ruwaichi–Njoro Road, the 1.25-kilometre Pepsi Road and the 5.1-kilometre Shirimatunda–Magereza Road to tarmac standard.

In addition, a 2-kilometre stormwater drain will be constructed along Ushirika–Keys Hotel– Moshi Pazuri and another 1.9-kilometre drain in Kibong’oto.

Ms Nasombe said once completed, the projects will enhance connectivity within Moshi, improve access to social and economic services and unlock the municipality’s economic potential.

Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner, Nurdin Babu commended President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration for its continued investment in regional infrastructure and urged contractors to deliver quality work on schedule.

“This project is crucial for Moshi residents. Beyond improving road infrastructure, it will also enhance the managerial and technical capacity of Moshi Municipality, enabling better planning and maintenance of roads,” he noted.

Engineer Emmanuel Manyanga from the Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA), who represented the TARURA CEO at the event, said the project is part of the government’s plan to improve infrastructure across 45 cities and build capacity within councils for improved urban management and revenue collection.

He explained that the project is funded by the government under the Tanzania Cities Transforming Infrastructure and Competitiveness (TACTIC) programme.

“This programme covers five cities, 18 municipalities, including Moshi Municipal and 22 towns. Moshi is part of the second tier of the project, which recently commenced,” he added.
