Majaliwa to lead GBV Marathon

ZANZIBAR: PRIME Minister, Kassim Majaliwa, is set to grace the Asma Ali Hassan Mwinyi Marathon, scheduled to take place on December 1st this year in Zanzibar.

In a meeting with the Director of Asma Ali Hassan Mwinyi, who is also the Director of the Asma Mwinyi Foundation over the weekend, the Prime Minister warm welcomed Tanzanians to participate in the ‘Stop GBV Half Marathon.’

“This marathon is organised to raise awareness and combat gender-based violence (GBV) against women and children. The guest of honour will be Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa and the event will be held in Stone Town, Zanzibar,” said Asma.

The main goal of the ‘Stop GBV Half Marathon in Zanzibar’ is to take a stand against gender-based violence, particularly targeting women and children.

This initiative comes at a time when gender violence is a significant concern within Tanzanian society. The event is part of a larger effort to reduce the prevalence of such violence through public awareness and community engagement.

“The marathon aims to raise awareness about gender-based violence and we are hoping to draw a large crowd to participate. The violence has become a major issue within our communities and we believe this event will help address that,” added Asma.

The marathon will feature several races, including a 5-kilometre run, a 4-kilometre run and a 2-kilometre run, encouraging people of all fitness levels to take part.

The organisers stress the importance of exercise for maintaining good health and emphasise the significance of standing up against gender-based violence.

Asma further urged the public to participate in the event, not only for the health benefits of physical activity but also to show solidarity in the fight against violence directed towards women and children.

She explained that these marathons aim to help raise awareness about this critical issue while also promoting healthy living.

“We invite all Tanzanians to join us in Stone Town for this important event. Together, we can make a difference. Not only will we be encouraging fitness, but we will also be showing our commitment to ending gender-based violence,” Asma stated.

With Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa expected to attend as the guest of honour, the Stop GBV Half Marathon is anticipated to draw significant attention and participation, marking a pivotal moment in the on-going efforts to combat gender-based violence across Tanzania.
