Majaliwa calls for religious rights, legal order balance
DAR ES SALAAM: PRIME Minister Kassim Majaliwa has urged religious leaders and worshippers across the country to exercise their constitutional right to freedom of worship in a way that respects public order and complies with the laws of the land.
Speaking during the national Eid al-Adha Council yesterday at the King Mohammed VI Mosque in Kinondoni, Dar es Salaam, the Premier insisted on the importance of conducting religious activities within the framework of the law.
“As we come together to worship, we must be mindful of the laws that safeguard freedom of religion. Freedom of worship does not mean people are free to do as it pleases them. The existence of this mosque, a church or any other place of worship is authorized and protected by law. Our gathering here today and the Sheikh’s ability to address us, is possible because the law permits it,” he said.
Citing Article 19 of the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania, Mr Majaliwa said that every citizen has the right to choose and practice their religion freely, emphasising that this must not lead to any breach of peace or legal violations.
“Whether in private, in groups or in public, our actions especially in religious gatherings must be conducted within legal boundaries. Article 19, clearly provides for every individual’s right to follow a religion of their choice, to worship and to conduct religious activities,” he said.
Majaliwa also urged religious leaders to ensure that places of worship serve their intended purpose of fostering spiritual growth, promoting peace and building moral unity within society.
“Whenever we gather in mosques, churches or any place of worship, let us remember that these spaces are sacred and reserved for religious activities. We expect our religious leaders be it a Sheikh or a Pastor to use their time to preach faith, teach spiritual values and strengthen the moral fabric of society. Worshippers come to be uplifted spiritually, to leave with peace, unity and guidance,” the Premier added.
The Premier further reaffirmed the government’s confidence in religious leaders from all denominations, recognising them as vital partners in maintaining peace and harmony through their teachings.
“The government places great trust in religious leaders of all faiths. You have been instrumental in promoting peace and unity through your sermons. I assure you that the government will continue to strengthen its cooperation with religious leaders to ensure sustained peace and national cohesion,” he said.
He also commended Mufti of Tanzania, Abubakar Zubeir for his continued efforts to promoting unity among Muslims of different sects.
“I congratulate our Mufti for his tireless efforts in uniting Muslims across the country, regardless of sects. Today, Muslims are speaking with one voice and that unity is of great significance to our national cohesion,” he said.
Echoing the Premier’s sentiments, the National Muslim Council of Tanzania (BAKWATA), SecretaryGeneral Alhaj Nuhu Mruma, underscored the importance of using places of worship appropriately by focusing on spreading authentic religious teachings derived from Holy Scriptures and to avoid political sermons, which could divide congregants with different political views.
He also stressed the importance of preserving peace, noting that without peace, development and even worship would not be possible.
“BAKWATA calls on all Tanzanians to safeguard the peace in our country. Without peace, there could be no development in the country and even worship would be impossible,” he explained.
Mr Mruma also encouraged all citizens, especially those participating in this year’s General Election, to engage in morally upright politics and to use their constitutional rights responsibly either by voting or standing as candidates.
He further urged electoral authorities to uphold justice throughout the electoral process to ensure that every citizen’s constitutional rights are respected.
Moreover, the Acting Mufti of Tanzania, Sheikh Ali Khamis Ngeruko, called on Tanzanians to exercise caution during the upcoming elections by choosing leaders who demonstrate competence and clearly articulate their policies.
“As we approach the elections, I urge all citizens to be vigilant and elect leaders based on their ability to present sound and well-thoughtout policies,” he said.
