Lugalo gears up for KCB East Africa Golf Tour

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA People’s Defence Force (TPDF) Lugalo Golf Club in Dar es Salaam is set to host the KCB Bank Lugalo Golf tournament.

The tournament that is part of the road to the KCB Bank East Africa Golf Tour 2025 is scheduled to tee off on September 20, at the Lugalo club course.

The tournament is one of the key legs of the KCB East Africa Golf Tour, which spans five countries across the region: Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi.

The Lugalo leg will be especially significant for Tanzania, as it will determine the four top players who will go on to represent the country at the grand finals in Kenya, scheduled for December.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam yesterday ahead of the weekend tournament Lugalo Golf Club Manager David Mzirai, on behalf of Club Chairman Major General Wilbert Ibuge, expressed gratitude to KCB Bank for returning as the title sponsor for the second year running.

“We’ve prepared the course well in readiness for the tournament and expect all participants to enjoy the competition,” said Mzirai, assuring both players and fans of a professionally run event.

Representing the sponsor, KCB Group Business Director and Managing Director Gabriel Lekundayo commended Lugalo for their hospitality and praised the growing standard of golf in the region.

“Last year was our debut and the event exceeded expectations. This year, we aim even higher,” Lekungayo said.

“KCB Bank recognises that sports contribute to health and employment. As a key stakeholder, we see these tournaments as part of our contribution to the community.”

According to Lekundayo, the four best performers from the Lugalo Championship will travel to Nairobi to face off against finalists from the other four East African nations.

The ultimate winner of the regional finals will walk away with a 20m/- top prize.

In a bid to promote national pride and local resources, Tanzania’s team this year has been named “Tanzanite”, after the rare and valuable gemstone found only in the country.

KCB will fully sponsor the team, covering travel, accommodation and meals throughout the finals.

Lugalo Captain Japhet Masai confirmed high interest in the event, reporting that 121 players had registered by yesterday, with total participation expected to reach 150 by tournament day.
