DODOMA: THE Land Transport Regulatory Authority (LATRA) is reviewing regulations on goods carrying vehicle under the Transport Licencing Act to come up with new rules and guidelines for cargo tricycles so as to support the safe and sustainable growth of active mobility, the Deputy Minister for Transport David Kihenzile has said.
He said in Parliament on Wednesday that under the review of the Transport Licensing (Goods Carrying Vehicles) Regulations, 2020, there would be new penalties on cargo tricycles.
He was responding to a question posed by Ng’wasi Kamani (CCM- Special Seats) who asked for the government position on the rationale of imposing a penalty on good carrying tricycles, commonly known as ‘Bajajis’ similar to the fine imposed on trucks after violating the regulations.

Cargo tricycles are liable to the penalty amounting to 250,000/-, for violating the Transport Licensing (Goods Carrying Vehicles) Regulations, 2020, an amount that is also slapped on vehicles carrying goods.
The MP wanted the government to review the regulations so that a penalty amounting to 25,000/- can be imposed on offending tricycles instead of 250,000/-.
According to the deputy minister, the government, through Land Transport Regulatory Authority (LATRA), has already carried out review on the regulations.
One of the aspects considered in the review process is the reduction of the penalty slapped on Bajajis upon infringing the regulations.
