Kenyan athletics legend Henry Rono dies at 72

KENYA: Kenya’s former world marathon record holder, Henry Rono, has died at the age of 72.

The former athlete succumbed to a short illness on Thursday morning at a hospital in the capital, Nairobi, the Athletics Kenya announced in a statement.

He made history by breaking four world records in just 81 days in 1978. They included 3000 meters, 5000 Meters, 10,000 Meters and 3000 Meter steeplechase.

He also set the world record for the 5,000m in 1981.

Rono later relocated to the US in 1986 where he lived for over three decades before returning home in 2019.

His death comes at a time when Kenya and the world is still in mourning the demise of marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum, who died in a tragic road accident last Sunday.
