Kariakoo sewage system set for 24-hour cleanup

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Dar es Salaam Water and Sanitation Authority (DAWASA) has set up a 24-hour camp in the Kariakoo area to repair sewage transportation and drainage infrastructure to keep the environment clean and safe.

Speaking about the implementation of the work, the Head of Sewerage Infrastructure at DAWASA, Engineer Mbaraka Mpala said this work is one of the Authority’s priorities in improving environmental sanitation in the Kariakoo area and making businesses operate in a safe and clean environment.

“We are doing this work mostly at night, because the environment of this commercial area is difficult to clean during the day when there are many people and the congestion is high,” said Engineer Mpala and added:

He added “We are cleaning this infrastructure to end the problem of frequent blockages and sewage flowing in the street, which endangers the health of traders and buyers who enter and exit here, a situation caused mainly by the disposal of solid waste in sewage systems such as clothes, stones, tires and plastic.”

One of the traders in the Kariakoo market, Lameck Nganjiro, has praised DAWASA’s procedure to clean this sewage infrastructure, especially at night when congestion and commercial activities have decreased.

“Kariakoo is an area that receives many people during the day, the use of water that turns into sewage is very high, if this infrastructure is not checked regularly, it will be used improperly and cause incidents in this area when sewage flows into the streets, these efforts by DAWASA are a great thing and we commend them for this step,” said Lameck.
