Jenista Mhagama: Tanzania mourns the death of former Health Minister

DODOMA: President Samia Suluhu Hassan has mourned the death of Tanzania’s former Health minister and Member of Parliament for Peramiho constituency, Jenista Mhagama who passed away today in Dodoma aged 58.

Sending her condolence through her social handles, the Head of State said that for 38 years, Mhagama served as a committed member of Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), a youth leader, a women’s leader, a minister in various administrations, and a mentor to many in politics and in life.

“I have received with great sadness the news of the passing of the Member of Parliament for Peramiho Constituency, Jenista Joakim Mhagama. I extend my condolences to the Speaker of the Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania, Mussa Azzan Zungu, the people of Peramiho Constituency, the family, relatives, and friends,” the President stated.

The death of the politician was confirmed by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Issa Zungu.

“With great sadness, I would like to announce the death of the Peramiho Member of Parliament, Jenista Mhagama, which occurred today, December 2025, in Dodoma,” he stated.

He added; “I extend my condolences to all Members of Parliament, the family of the deceased, relatives, friends, and the people of Peramiho Constituency. May the Almighty God grant them patience and comfort during this difficult time.”

In his information, the Speaker of the House stated that the Office of Parliament, in collaboration with the family of the deceased, is coordinating the funeral arrangements and further information will continue to be provided.

Minister Mhagama who was a member of parliament for several years succeeded Ummy Mwalimu as minister for health whose tenure in the role lasted 14 years.

In December 2015, she was appointed as a Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office responsible for Policy, Parliamentary Affairs, Labour, Employment, Youth and the Disabled in President John Magufuli’s administration.

In January 2022, she was moved to the President’s Office, Good Governance and Public Services. Mhagama first became involved with CCM in 1987 and served in a variety of roles including in the youth and women wings of the party. She was first appointed to the Parliament from a special seat reserved for women in 2000
