ZANZIBAR: AS the Zanzibar Tourism and Investment Show (ZTIS) approaches on the 25th and 26th of this month, Minister for Tourism and Heritage Mr Mudrik Ramadhan Soraga has encouraged locals to seize the opportunity to promote traditional foods to visitors.
“This event is a chance to showcase our culture and traditional foods. Let us prepare to welcome tourists from various countries,” Mr Soraga urged during his visit to Msonge Farm and Restaurant, known for its traditional cuisine, in Shakani, Unguja West B District.
He emphasised that the private sector should take advantage of tourists’ interest in experiencing new flavours and services that differ from what they encounter in their home countries. “In addition to our historical sites, beautiful beaches and spice farms, traditional food will surely enhance their experience. We have the food; let’s use it to boost tourism,” he stated.

Mr Soraga expressed hope that the community, particularly local hoteliers and restaurant owners, would respond positively to this call to promote traditional foods and culture. He highlighted the health benefits of traditional and natural foods, noting that many elders remain healthy while youth today often suffer from illnesses related to unhealthy eating habits.
Dr Mwatima Abdalla Juma, Managing Director of Msonge Farm and Restaurant, noted that traditional and organic foods are not only preventive but also therapeutic against various diseases. “If farmers in Unguja and Pemba prioritise organic farming and restaurant owners utilise these products, it will undoubtedly enhance Zanzibar’s tourism market and attract international recognition,” she said.
Dr Mwatima noted that organic farming is environmentally friendly and aligns with tourist preferences for organic products. “Promoting organic farming is crucial for boosting tourism,” she added.
Mr Wilfred Shirima, CEO of the Zanzibar Hoteliers Association, highlighted the ZTIS as a significant opportunity for promoting the tourism sector. “This event allows us to advertise and sell our products and services,” he stated, noting that preparations for the show are well underway.
