ICGLR congratulates Dr Samia on her presidential victory

KINSHASA: THE International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) has hailed Tanzanian President, Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, for winning Tanzania’s presidential race.
The Vice President, Emmanuel Nchimbi, participated in the Summit of Heads of State of the ICGLR, marking his first international engagement outside the country representing President Samia Suluhu Hassan since he was sworn into office on November 3, 2025.
Held in Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), on November 15, 2025, the summit was opened by the President of DRC, Felix Tshisekedi, who assumed the chairmanship of the organization from the President of Angola, João Lourenço

In his opening remarks, President Tshisekedi congratulated President Samia on her victory and for overseeing a free, fair, and transparent election held on October 29, 2025.

Additionally, President Tshisekedi and other leaders who addressed the summit, including the ICGLR Executive Secretary, Ambassador João Samuel Caholo, the Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, and the Representative of the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, emphasized the importance of the organization continuing its role in promoting peace, security, and development among member states.

The leaders called on member states to return to the founding principles of the organization by providing the necessary resources to enable ICGLR to effectively carry out its mandate.
Established in 2006 to foster peace, security, and development in member states, the ICGLR will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2026, during which member states are expected to assess the implementation its goals.
