IAE updates alternative education modules

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Institute of Adult Education (IAE) has updated eight general subjects’ modules, prepared syllabi and vocational subjects’ modules for stage one (Form One to Form Two) for alternative secondary education.

Conducted through the Secondary Education Quality Improvement Project – Alternative Education Pathway (SEQUIP–AEP) the initiative aims to enhance curricula for education outside the formal system so that they align with the 2014 Education and Training Policy, 2023 Edition, which emphasises vocational training.

IAE Director General, Prof Philipo Sanga said the initiative is crucial for community development as it targets many Tanzanians who are outside the formal education system.

“This initiative is crucial for community development as it targets many Tanzanians who are outside the formal education system,” he said during the session to upgrade the modules in Morogoro on Tuesday.

Prof Sanga said that IAE has always been committed to providing education that focuses on practical knowledge and skills.

He added that statistics show that more than 400,000 pupils drop out of primary education every year, denying them the opportunity to continue within the formal system.

“IAE was established to serve such groups by offering alternative education that equips them with knowledge and skills equivalent to formal education,” Prof Sanga said.

Prof Sanga added that the preparation of these modules involves qualified and experienced experts to ensure they empower learners to become self-reliant or reintegrate into the formal education system.

“The preparation of these modules involves qualified and experienced experts to ensure they empower learners to become selfreliant or reintegrate into the formal education system,” he said.

The workshop began on December 29, 2025 and was concluded yesterday bringing together experts in secondary education, adult education and non-formal education.

The goal is to review general education modules and develop new general and vocational modules in line with the relevant policy
