House weighs putting Samia’s image in currency

TANZANIA: The government has received the recommendation of putting President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s image in the Tanzanian currency as a way of keeping a permanent record of the country having the first female President.

Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa made the statement at the Parliament in Dodoma on Thursday, during the Question and Answers session saying that the proposal will be discussed and once a decision is made, they will officially communicate.

The Premier was responding to a question from a Special Seat MP, Ng’wasi Kamani who questioned that since the Parliament passed a law that allows the Central Bank to design money by putting logos and various raw materials available in the country, isn’t it the right time to place President Samia’s picture in the currency considering her hard renowned work in both Africa and globally.

Elaborating further, the PM said that placing pictures of various leaders on the currency is a decision made by the leaders themselves in collaboration with the Central Bank, adding that the matter has been raised in the parliament, and the house will look into it.

“The decision of placing the photos of various leaders on the currency was made with the aim of remembering the contributions of those leaders in the country…the current photo are those of the late Father of the Nation Julius Kambarage Nyerere and the first President of Zanzibar as their pictures were used as part of their records,” he stated.
