Hisense reinforces commitment to innovation, local market growth

DAR ES SALAAM: HISENSE President for the Middle East, Africa (MEA) and India, Mr Jason Ou, has reaffirmed the company’s commitment to advancing technological innovation tailored to meet customer needs, as Tanzania’s electronic market continues to record significant growth.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam during the launch of a new product in the local market, Mr Ou said the company is driven by a mission to understand and respond to consumers’ needs while contributing to national development goals.

“We understand their needs and our mission is to go to the market and support the need through our products,” he said. “We are dedicated to improving community well-being and stimulating national economic growth.”

Hisense Tanzania, which currently commands 50 per cent of the local market share, continues to expand its footprint across the country. The company’s growing presence is part of a broader trend, as the electronic market in Tanzania experiences rapid expansion fuelled by rising demand for consumer electronics, the growth of e-commerce, and strengthened local manufacturing efforts.

The government has been actively encouraging investment in local electronics manufacturing to reduce dependency on imports and boost employment. Hisense’s contribution aligns with these national objectives, with the company reportedly engaging nearly 95 per cent of Tanzanians in its workforce.

Tanzania’s ambition to develop a vibrant tech ecosystem is further supported by the Tanzania Information and Communication Technology Commission (ICTC), which has lauded recent local initiatives aimed at strengthening the digital economy.

One such initiative includes Arusha-based TanzTech Electronics, which began local assembly of smartphones and ICT equipment in 2023. According to ICTC statistics, the company has a monthly assembly capacity of 40,000 smartphones, 30,000 tablets, 15,000 laptops, and 10,000 projectors.

ICTC Director General, Dr Nkundwe Mwasaga, hailed TanzTech Electronics for responding positively to the government’s call for local investment in ICT assembly.

“This is a bold step towards strengthening our digital economy and ensuring affordable, locally made technology solutions for our people,” said Dr Mwasaga.

During the event, Hisense also signed an extension agreement with its partner, underlining its long-term commitment to the local market. Speaking at the occasion, Mars Communication Officer Ms Tahera Kareem said the continued innovation and collaboration in the electronics sector is enhancing the value and competitiveness of Tanzania’s tech industry.

“This innovation adds more value to the country’s electronic market and reflects the sector’s potential to transform our economy,” she said.

As local and international players continue to invest in the sector, Tanzania’s electronics market remains poised for sustained growth, with stakeholders optimistic about the opportunities ahead.
