HANDENI, TANGA: SECONDARY school students in Handeni District, Tanga Region preparing for their final Ordinary Level exams, have been encouraged to recognise their significant roles in society.

They were reminded of the hopes and expectations their parents and the nation have for them and were urged to avoid behaviours that could hinder their dreams and ambitions.

This message was delivered by Ms Mariam Mwanilwa, Chairman of the Friends of Handeni Development Association (MMAHA), during a special visit over the weekend.

Ms Mwanilwa visited eight secondary schools across Handeni District, overseeing special classes designed to tackle complex academic topics and provide students with the support they need to succeed.

The schools visited included Misima, Kwenjugo, Handeni, Kivesa and Komnyang’anyo Secondary Schools in Handeni Town Council, as well as Kival, Mkata and Segera Secondary Schools in Handeni District Council.

During her visit, Ms Mwanilwa distributed essential items worth 5m/-, including female towels and soaps.

Girls received pads and soap, while boys were given soap for use during the special classes.

Ms Mwanilwa stated that MMAHA’s visit underscores the community’s commitment to the educational success and well-being of its youth.

She emphasised the importance of self-awareness, discipline and a strong sense of responsibility as students approaching their exams.

“By focusing on your goals and maintaining a positive outlook, you are equipping yourselves to overcome challenges and achieve your dreams,” she said.

Ms Mwanilwa also cautioned students against behaviours that contravene Tanzanian societal norms and values.

“Be vigilant against destructive behaviours such as same-sex marriages, child pregnancies and early marriages, which undermine the values of our society,” she warned.

Speaking on behalf of the eight secondary school heads, Komnyang’anyo Secondary School Headmaster Martin Lawrence Mwingo praised the initiative by the Friends of Handeni Development Association.

He noted that the support provided not only addresses practical needs but also serves as an inspiration for students to stay focused and strive for excellence.

“This initiative is a reminder that the community stands behind them, ready to support their journey to success,” he said.

Rehema Athumani Kijoto, a Form Four student at Komnyang’anyo Secondary School, expressed her gratitude for the support, noting that it would help reduce truancy among girls who miss classes during their periods due to a lack of pads.

Hamis Salehe Mpandile, another student from the same school, highlighted the challenges many students face when their parents are unable to meet their basic needs, especially during critical times.

“This support will positively impact the pass rate,” he assured MMAHA leaders.
