‘Guardians of the Peak’ premieres in Dar

DAR ES SALAAM: A POWERFUL new environmental documentary, Guardians of the Peak, is set to premiere in Dar es Salaam on May 5th, this year.
Directed by acclaimed Tanzanian filmmaker Ram Ally, the film offers a cinematic experience that combines stunning visuals with a strong call for environmental conservation and sustainable tourism on Mount Kilimanjaro.
The documentary, inspired by the spirit of The Royal Tour, aims to support national efforts to position Tanzania as a global tourism hub, while promoting environmental stewardship, especially within the Chinese market.
Ram Ally, known internationally for his hit film NYARA: The Kidnapping (currently streaming on Netflix), has collaborated with Elizabeth Mrembo, a Tanzanian citizen of Chinese descent, who serves as the Project Supervisor and Coordinator.
Mrembo’s unique crosscultural background and experience in China bring an insightful perspective to the film’s message and presentation.
“This documentary continues the efforts initiated by President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan through The Royal Tour, aiming to position Tanzania as a leading destination for tourism and investment,” said Ally during a press conference.
He emphasised that Guardians of the Peak is more than just a documentary—it’s a call to action.
“The premiere will showcase not only the film but also highlight the urgent need to safeguard our environment,” Ally said. “It’s a celebration of Tanzania’s natural beauty and a testament to the power of collaboration in protecting our heritage for future generations.”
The film is the result of a Strategic Collaborative Project for Environment and Tourism, involving Ram Films, Zara Tanzania Adventures, the Tanzania-China Friendship Promotion Association (TCFPA) and the Tanzania Film Board. The Film Board has officially endorsed the project, recognising its potential to contribute to national development priorities.
Director of the Film Development Film Board, Mr Emmanuel Ndumukwa, underscored the board’s support in fostering collaboration between private film stakeholders and government institutions.
“This film educates the public on the importance of environmental conservation, particularly around Mount Kilimanjaro. It also plays a significant role in promoting Tanzania’s tourism sector globally, especially in the Chinese market,” Mr Ndumukwa said.
He added that the upcoming launch will serve multiple purposes: Honouring Tanzania’s conservation achievements, raising awareness and fostering collaboration across sectors.
The event is expected to attract a diverse audience, including government officials, investors, conservation organisations, film industry professionals and international development partners.
As the world faces the challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss, Guardians of the Peak arrives at a critical moment, reaffirming Tanzania’s commitment to promoting eco-conscious development while celebrating one of its most iconic natural wonders— Mount Kilimanjaro.
“The film is an artistic and educational piece designed to inspire, inform and ignite action,” Mr Ndumukwa said. “Its goal is to bridge cultures, spark dialogue and encourage participation from both the public and private sectors in the sustainable tourism movement.”
Chief Accountant at Meticulous General Insurance, Emile Brown said that the initiative serves to highlight the immense value of Tanzania’s natural heritage.
“Through this project, we are demonstrating the importance of the natural wealth that Tanzania possesses and the need to protect it,” Brown said.
She added that the project is not only about inspiring patriotism among Tanzanians but also instilling environmental responsibility in the younger generation. “This project nurtures patriotism and teaches future generations the importance of preserving the country’s natural resources,” Brown said.
Beyond Tanzania’s borders, Brown noted that the project also serves as a bridge connecting Tanzania to China and the global community. “Through this project, we are building a bridge between Tanzania, China and the world, promoting global collaboration on environmental issues,” she said.
