Govt to boost seed production to support farmers

DODOMA: THE government has unveiled plans to increase production of quality seeds in the country in a bid to reduce heavy reliance on imports and ensure farmers access improved seeds ahead of the farming season.
Speaking in Dodoma over the weekend, Acting Director of the Agricultural Seed Agency (ASA), Mr Leonard Mavika, said the government has drawn up strategies to ensure adequate production and timely distribution of seeds to farmers.
He noted that the aim is to guarantee farmers have access to affordable and quality seeds before the farming season kicks off.
“We are well prepared to make sure that farmers access seeds on time this season. Our main goal is to see them benefit and make significant progress in their farming activities,” he said.

Mr Mavika explained that the government has invested heavily in the agricultural sector and will continue to collaborate with the private sector to enhance seed production. He added that the seeds will be sold at affordable prices to enable every farmer to access quality seeds, thereby promoting productive and profitable farming across the country.
The ASA boss stressed the importance of farmers embracing government-approved seeds, which have undergone research to guarantee quality and resilience against climate change.
He further highlighted that during the recently concluded Nane Nane International Agricultural Exhibition in Dodoma, the agency provided public awareness on the use of improved seeds and productive farming practices.
According to him, extension officers across the country will continue to educate farmers on the importance of using researched and approved seeds, noting that the long-term goal is to promote profitable agriculture that supports farmers’ livelihoods and strengthens household economies.
