Govt reaffirms commitment to boost secondary school infrastructure

DAR ES SALAAM: MINISTER of State in the President’s Office (Planning and Investment), Professor Kitila Mkumbo, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to investing in secondary school infrastructure to improve education outcomes across Tanzania.

Speaking at the 14th Young Scientists Tanzania (YST) Award ceremony on Sunday, the minister praised YST’s pivotal role in fostering scientific innovation over the past 14 years.

During the event, Prof Mkumbo highlighted the remarkable achievements of students in developing solutions to pressing global challenges.

“The YST Science for Development Programme is thriving, encouraging students to explore and implement their ideas,” he said.

He commended YST’s innovative approach that nurtures critical thinking and creativity in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Students showcased projects resulting from extensive research and collaboration nationwide. The ceremony also recognised the contributions of partner organisations, including the Karimjee Foundation and Concern Worldwide, as well as various academic institutions.

“These collaborations are essential for advancing STEM education in our schools,” he noted.

Prof Yunus Mgaya, YST board chairperson, underscored the importance of fostering a culture of scientific inquiry among youths.

He stressed the critical role young researchers play in addressing local and global challenges.

“Investing in our youth is investing in our future,” he asserted.

Cobus Van Zyl, Head of Marketing at the Karimjee Foundation Group, reiterated this commitment, announcing that the foundation will sponsor four additional students this year, bringing their total to 49 since the initiative began.

“Investing in education is crucial for building a sustainable future,” he said, highlighting the role of private organisations in promoting educational opportunities.

The foundation’s ongoing support reflects a dedication to youth empowerment and educational excellence, aiming to inspire more students to pursue careers in science and technology.

“Every child has the potential to contribute meaningfully to society and we are proud to play a part in that journey.” Van Zyl concluded.
