Govt reaffirms commitment to arts, artists’ welfare
DAR ES SALAAM: DEPUTY Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Hamis Mwinjuma, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to deepening cooperation with arts stakeholders in a bid to improve the working environment and safeguard the welfare of artists across the country.
Mwinjuma made the remarks during a consultative meeting with various arts sector stakeholders held at the ministry’s offices at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam. He said such engagements form part of the ministry’s ongoing coordination efforts aimed at listening to the challenges facing artists and developing practical, sustainable solutions.
“The ministry will continue to listen to the voices of arts stakeholders, including actors and other practitioners and take appropriate measures that will stimulate the growth of the arts sector in the country,” he said.
Mwinjuma emphasised that the government remains committed to supporting artists and strengthening collaboration with all relevant stakeholders to enhance the sector’s contribution to national development while expanding employment opportunities for young people.

According to Mwinjuma, the arts sector plays a critical role in promoting national culture, creating jobs and strengthening social cohesion. He noted that improving cooperation between the government and arts stakeholders is essential for building a conducive working environment and unlocking the sector’s full potential. “One of the key benefits of strong collaboration is the protection of artists’ welfare.
When the government works closely with arts stakeholders, it becomes easier to address challenges such as poor working conditions, lack of social security and unfair treatment of artists,” he said.
The deputy minister added that safeguarding artists’ rights and interests encourages creativity and professionalism, enabling artists to produce high-quality work that reflects Tanzania’s values and cultural identity.
Mwinjuma also highlighted the arts sector’s vast capacity to generate employment, particularly for the youth, noting that creative industries such as music, film, theatre, fashion and visual arts have the potential to absorb a large number of young people if properly supported.
