DAR ES SALAAM: THE government has reiterated committed to ensuring the provision of reliable electricity to citizens in all corners of the country.
Deputy Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Energy, Dr Khatibu Kazungu, made the statement during his working visit to the Kidatu Hydroelectric Power Station in Kilombero District, Morogoro Region, on Sunday, saying electricity is vital for both economic and social development.
The station produces 204 megawatts of electricity.
He further explained that effective management of power generation projects is essential for ensuring efficient energy distribution, which supports both economic and social development.
“The Ministry of Energy has a significant responsibility to ensure that the public receives reliable electricity to drive various development activities,” Dr Kazungu said.
He also noted that the Kidatu Power Station, which began operations in 1975, is now celebrating 50 years of service.
Dr Kazungu directed the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) to conduct a feasibility study and undertake renovations at the station to maintain efficient power generation.
He also inspected turbine number two, which is currently undergoing repairs that began in May 2024 and are expected to be completed by the end of this month.

The deputy PS instructed TANESCO to closely monitor the contractor, to ensure the work is completed on time and that the turbine is integrated with other units to increase electricity generation capacity.
On his part, the Project Manager at Kidatu Station, Engineer Manfred Lucas, assured that TANESCO will continue to ensure that the power station’s turbines remain in good condition and operate continuously, thereby contributing sufficient power to the national grid and supporting the government’s goal of boosting both individual and national economic growth.
