Govt emphasises community role in protecting roads

ZANZIBAR: THE Minister of State in the President’s Office responsible for Regional Administration, Local Government and Special Departments, Mr Idrisa Kitwana Mustafa, has urged citizens to protect road infrastructure to support economic growth and development.
Speaking during the laying of foundation stone ceremony for the construction of Mahonda–Pangatupu–Bumbwini road, the minister said road construction plays a vital role in attracting development, creating jobs and easing transportation of agricultural produce.
The ceremony was held as part of the 62nd revolution anniversary celebrations. He said the expansion of road networks will enhance safety, reduce transport costs and stimulate economic activities.
He noted that the government remains a key driver of development for all citizens. Mr Kitwana also acknowledged the presence of citizens whose properties were affected by the road construction, assuring them that the government is continuing compensation payments to affected residents in Unguja and Pemba.
Presenting a technical report, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Construction and Transport, Engineer Ali Said Bakari, said more than 12 million US dollars (over 30.6bn/-) has been spent on the project, which includes an 11.3-kilometre road and the 100-metre Pangatupu Bridge.
Deputy Minister for Construction and Transport, Ms Badria Atai Masoud, said more than 1,084 metres of roads have already been paved to asphalt standards in Unguja and Pemba, urging citizens to use and protect the roads to ensure their long-term durability.
