Govt dishes out 1bn/- to improve water services in Geita region

THE government through the Ministry of Water has provided 1bn/- to Geita Urban Water and Sanitation Authority (GEUWASA) to improve water filter, improving availability of the precious liquid to the area residents.

GEUWASA Technical Manager Eng Izack Mgeni spoke of the funds when making the project presentation to Geita District Commissioner when he visited the project.

Engineer Mgeni explained that the expansion of water filtration system   will increase water production from 200,000 litres to 350,000 litres per hour.

“The expansion of the water filtration system is carried out at the major water source in Geita located at Nyankanga Village, currently with the capacity to produce 4 million litres per day while the actual demand is 18 million litres per day.

He said the improvement will also help people to have access to water from 12 hours to 18 hours per day.

“This project involves the construction of water treatment infrastructure but we have also to purchase a large pump that will pump the precious liquid to tanks located in Geita Town. The expansion of the water filter will cost 812m/- upon completion.

“The purchase of the pump will cost 199m/- This project is expected to be completed by November 2022 according to the contractor’s work plan,” he said.

Project Operations Manager from GIPCO, Mr Keneth Sindiro said the project implementation is progressing well and it will be completed as planned.

GEUWASA Executive Director, Eng Frank Changawa said the project will   improve water services in Geita Town and the neighboring areas while waiting for the implementation of a major water project from Lake Victoria.

Geita District Commissioner, Mr Wilson Shimo urged the project contractor to abide by contractual terms in executing the project to attain the intended objectives.
