PEMBA, ZANZIBAR: The government has pledged to address ongoing issues of inadequate high-speed internet and reliable mobile communication in several parts of Pemba Island, aiming to bridge the connectivity gap and boost development in the region.
Deputy Minister for Information, Communication, and Information Technology, Eng. Maryprisca Mahundi, reaffirmed the government’s commitment during her official visit to the island on Friday.
The visit aimed to inspect communication infrastructure and identify areas needing improvement provided a platform for addressing resident’s concerns.
“Communication services are a critical tool for development. Our goal is to ensure every citizen, regardless of their location, has access to reliable and quality communication services,” she stated.
She also pledged to address all identified challenges promptly, including upgrading infrastructure, and vowed to collaborate with stakeholders to find lasting solutions.
Mahundi also emphasized the government’s dedication to strengthening communication networks.

The visit is part of broader efforts by the Tanzanian government to use communication services as a driver of development across the nation.
Speaking during the visit, the Chief Executive Officer of the Universal Communications Service Access Fund (UCSAF), Eng. Peter Mwasalyanda, outlined the fund’s efforts to extend communication services to rural and remote areas, including islands.
He assured stakeholders that UCSAF would work closely with service providers to resolve the challenges raised.
The visit underscores the government’s determination to bridge the digital divide and foster inclusive development across all regions.
