TANZANIA: THE government has said it is looking into the possibility of starting supplying water to the public by tapping it from hydropower dams.
Water Minister Jumaa Aweso informed the august House on the idea, saying given the fact that some hydropower dams in the country have abundant water that is left to flow downstream after power production; the resource can be tapped to help communities living near the facilities.
Mr Aweso hinted on the possibility after Geoffrey Mwambe (CCM- Masasi) sought the government response on when it will complete the feasibility study for the Rufiji water project that draws water from Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant.
The project, according to Mr Mwambe, will supply water to Lindi and Mtwara regions’ residents.
In his clarification, Mr Aweso said the government continues with the procedures for the preliminary feasibility study for the water project that will ultimately increase water supply to residents of Lindi and Mtwara regions.
The minister also said the government continues with the review of the feasibility study for the water project that will draw water from Ruvuma River for Lindi and Mtwara residents.
Apart from generating power, water from Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant is said to be sufficient enough to be used in a number of activities, such as irrigation and domestic use.
