Government moves to open Malaysian Market for pigeon peas

DODOMA: THE government is finalising procedures to open a new export market for pigeon peas in Malaysia, a move expected to stabilise and boost prices for local farmers.
Deputy Minister for Agriculture David Silinde told the National Assembly on Monday that once approved, the crop will officially enter the Malaysian market, expanding opportunities for Tanzanian growers.
Mr Silinde was responding to a basic question from Itigi MP Yohana Msita (CCM), who sought the government’s plan to address the sharp drop in pigeon pea prices. He said securing the Malaysian market is part of broader efforts to widen market access and improve farm-gate prices.
“This step will expand trading options and help strengthen prices for farmers,” he said.

The Deputy Minister further revealed that the government has begun implementing a national strategy to distribute quality pigeon pea seeds. In the 2025/2026 financial year, the ministry plans to supply 400 kilogrammes of foundation seeds to farmers in Itigi District Council, capable of producing four tonnes of certified seeds.
“Our goal is to enhance productivity and output so that farmers can meet international market standards and secure better prices,” he said.
In his supplementary question, the MP asked when the government would deploy agricultural experts to Itigi to assist farmers in improving productivity.
Responding, Mr Silinde said the government will continue sending specialists to the area while strengthening the role of extension officers to ensure they deliver the intended support to farmers.
