Government encourages sports events to boost workers’ health
DAR ES SALAAM: THE government has urged its institutions to organise sports events to improve employees’ health and to increase national representation in international competitions.
The call was made over the weekend in Dar es Salaam by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Sports, Gerson Msigwa during a sports bonanza hosted by the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS).
Msigwa praised TBS for its commitment to workplace sports, noting that their investment in budgets and employee participation enhances creativity, efficiency and workplace relationships.
He also advised the TBS board to allocate funds for building quality sports facilities to provide a better environment for employees to engage in various sports.
On his part TBS Chairman, Prof Othman Chande Othman, highlighted that the sports bonanza, which started five years ago, aims to improve employee health and foster unity.

“While players compete as different teams, they come together after the game, fostering friendship,” Prof Chande explained.
He also noted that such events could increase the pool of athletes representing Tanzania internationally.
TBS Sports Chairperson, Nyabutwenza Methusela, emphasised the benefits of sports in addressing mental health challenges.
“Sports help employees manage stress and enhance their efficiency when they return to work. Improved mental and physical health leads to greater diligence and well-being”, she added.
