Goals galore, tight race as Premier League pauses

TANZANIA: AS the Mainland Premier League takes a break for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, a remarkable total of 92 goals have been scored across 102 matches.

Third-placed Fountain Gate lead the scoring chart with 14 goals from seven games, despite having the highest number of conceded goals (12) in the league.

Following closely are second-placed Simba, who have netted 12 goals while allowing just two goals past them in four matches. Current leaders, Singida Black Stars, have scored 9 goals and conceded three in their six outings.

Defending champions, Young Africans sit in fourth place with eight goals from four matches, impressively recording four clean sheets in the process. Both Azam and Coastal Union have scored six goals each, with Azam conceding just two goals while Coastal Union have let in nine goals.

Dodoma Jiji and Tabora United have each scored five goals after seven fixtures, though Dodoma Jiji have a stronger defensive record, conceding only four goals compared to Tabora United’s 10.

Mashujaa, KMC, Namungo and KenGold each have four goals, with Mashujaa and Namungo playing six matches, while KMC and KenGold have competed in seven.

Interestingly, JKT Tanzania and Tanzania Prisons have both scored and conceded three goals in six matches. Kagera Sugar have also netted three goals but have a troubling defensive record, allowing eight goals in seven games.

At the bottom of the table, Pamba Jiji have struggled significantly, scoring just two goals and conceding nine in their seven matches, indicating a lack of offensive potency.

Currently, only three teams; Singida Black Stars, Simba and Yanga remain unbeaten, all enjoying a perfect start to the league campaign.

Meanwhile, Yanga and Namungo FC are the only teams yet to draw, while Kagera Sugar and KenGold share the unfortunate distinction of having the most losses; with five each.
