GIGA launches work plan to digitalise all Tanzanian schools

DODOMA: THE Executive Committee of the School Connectivity and Internet Project (GIGA) has officially approved the GIGA Work Plan for the 2025/2026 fiscal year, which aims to accelerate the pace of school connectivity.
The decision was made during the first meeting of the committee chaired by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Prof Carolyne Nombo, in Dodoma.
Among many other things, the meeting discussed the progress of the GIGA Project implementation, where Prof Nombo also received a report on the initial implementation phase and the existing challenges as part of efforts to ensure that schools gain access to internet services to enhance digital learning.
Launched in 2019, Giga aims to connect every school in the world to the Internet.

The global initiative to connect every school to the Internet by 2030 is a joint effort created by UNICEF and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
According to the GIGA website, connecting schools allows children to develop digital skills and access online learning content.
“Schools can also become anchor points for surrounding communities: if you can connect the school, you can also connect local businesses and services. This creates opportunities for service providers to generate revenue from paying users, making connectivity more sustainable,” the website stated.
