GGML pledges unwavering support for Tanzania’s Sustainable Development Goals
GEITA: Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) has reaffirmed its strong commitment to supporting Tanzania’s progress in achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
The company emphasized its dedication to working closely with the government and other stakeholders during an awards ceremony hosted by the Global Compact Network Tanzania (GCNT) in Dar es Salaam over the weekend.
The event recognized businesses and organizations that have shown exemplary leadership in driving the implementation of SDGs and creating positive impacts on communities and the environment. GGML was honored with two prestigious awards, reflecting its significant contributions towards fulfilling these global objectives.
Speaking on behalf of GGML’s Managing Director, the company’s Public Relations and Communications Manager, Stephen Mhando, reiterated GGML’s pivotal role in advancing sustainable development.
“GGML is committed to championing the SDGs in Tanzania. As a frontrunner in implementing key goals, we continue to sponsor these awards to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of Tanzanians towards sustainable development,” Mhando said.
He further emphasized that GGML’s alignment with the SDGs is rooted in the company’s core values of sustainability, excellence, and collaboration.
One of GGML’s most impactful initiatives has been towards SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation). Mhando highlighted the Geita Water Project, where GGML invested $6 million to provide clean water to over 150,000 Geita residents, boosting access to safe water by 70% in the region.
Additionally, GGML’s focus on SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) has led to the creation of thousands of jobs and support for local businesses, bolstering Tanzania’s economic development. In line with SDG 4 (Quality Education), GGML has built schools and initiated educational programs that empower young Tanzanians to become future leaders.
In addressing SDG 13 (Climate Action), Mhando noted that GGML has implemented sustainable technologies and met the highest environmental standards. The recent launch of a 33/11KV Substation, powered by TANESCO’s national grid, marks a key milestone in the company’s environmental sustainability efforts.
“These awards not only recognize our efforts but also hold us accountable for the substantial work that remains to be done across the country to achieve a sustainable future,” Mhando stated. He reaffirmed GGML’s commitment to continuing its collaborative efforts to ensure that no one is left behind in Tanzania’s journey toward sustainable development.
GGML, a subsidiary of AngloGold Ashanti, also supports the principles of the United Nations Global Compact on human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption. In July 2024, GGML reaffirmed this commitment through an official application to join the Global Compact Network Tanzania, further solidifying its role in Tanzania’s sustainable future.
At the event, Dr. Lorah Madete, Deputy Executive Secretary for Business and Innovation at the Planning Commission, lauded the establishment of the awards and their role in motivating companies to actively pursue the SDGs. She encouraged more businesses to join the GCNT network to gain recognition, enhance competitiveness, and expand their impact on Tanzania’s development.

“We will continue engaging the private sector to ensure that their businesses are contributing to the implementation of the SDGs. I urge more companies to join this movement and help build a more sustainable future for all,” Dr. Madete emphasized.
GGML’s unwavering commitment to the SDGs, coupled with its tangible contributions across various sectors, showcases the transformative role the private sector can play in achieving Tanzania’s sustainable development vision. As the country progresses towards the 2030 deadline, GGML’s leadership and collaborative approach serve as an inspiring example for others to follow in shaping a more prosperous and environmentally conscious Tanzania.
